This small country’s architectural school stands out for its pronounced originality and is held in high esteem by the international architectural community. Rationality in action and innovation in ideas are its key characteristics. Also typical are a special culture of interaction with the environment (sensitive treatment of nature and heritage) and creativity in tackling creative briefs. Progressive Dutch architects are interested not so much in designing individual structures as in shaping the urban landscape of the country in general. At the present moment, the Netherlands is in effect an open-air laboratory for innovative architecture. Innovations may take any form whatsoever – from a dam or sound-absorption barrier along a highway to a small café or crane-like streetlamps on an urban square. The events and projects at the festival are intended to reveal and demonstrate the uniqueness of the Dutch creative approach to developing and transforming the world around us. The audience themselves will be able to assess the Dutch striving for harmonious and intelligent development of the human habitat, the unconventionality of their approach to traditional urban-planning problems, and the way the Dutch treat architectural design as an investigative process. Existing buildings illustrate how aptness in architecture depends directly on the degree of social responsibility shown by the architects. Focused on understanding and improving existing reality, modern Dutch architecture today shapes the frontline of the architectural world.
